[LOOK] Add This Memory Boosting Berry to Your Cart

(AscendHealthy.com) – We associate many delicious foods with summer, from grilled hot dogs to crisp watermelon. But one popular summer fruit has more benefits than good taste. Learn in the article below which seasonal berry can actually improve our memory.

Benefits of Strawberries

Strawberries rank as one of the most popular summer fruits. These sweet red berries are low in calories and contain no sodium, fat, or cholesterol.

Strawberries also offer many health benefits. This fruit has more vitamin C per serving than an orange, as well as antioxidants, manganese, and potassium. Adequate plasma levels of Vitamin C has been linked with healthy cognitive performance in a 2019 Australian study.

In addition, berries like strawberries contain large amounts of flavonoids. One long-term study showed that older women who had regularly eaten berries had reduced rates of cognitive decline. Eating berries may slow the aging of the brain by as much as 2.5 years.

In addition to the above benefits, strawberries have been shown to improve our memory. The key? Strawberries provide our bodies with a compound called fisetin.

How Fisetin In Strawberries Improves Memory

Research on fisetin began about 10 years ago. Scientists discovered that the fisetin in strawberries activates sirtuin.

Sirtuins have the potential to increase our lifespan as well as our ability to remember. By protecting our neurons against age-related degeneration from conditions like Alzheimer’s, sirtuins boost our memory and learning functions.

In addition, fisetin can help to boost our brain and body’s defense systems. A 2014 study performed on mice showed that those who received fisetin had fewer markers associated with inflammation and stress. Those mice also performed better on cognitive testing than the mice who did not receive fisetin.

Consuming strawberries with their high quantities of fisetin may also help to make our brain’s memory pathways stronger. Those strengthened pathways, together with the way that fisetin reduces the accumulation of harmful compounds in our brains, may reduce our risk of conditions, such as Alzheimer’s.

Fisetin also boosts our levels of serotonin, which in turn lifts our energy and mood. In addition, the compound increases noradrenaline, which helps with attention, memory retrieval, and perception.

One serving of strawberries, equivalent to eight tasty berries, contains more fisetin than other foods. Persimmons, grapes, apples and mangoes also contain this compound in smaller amounts, along with onions and grapes.

Strawberries rank high on our list of tasty summertime treats. The latest research gives us even more reasons to enjoy these seasonal fruits regularly. All we have to do to benefit from its memory-enhancing qualities. Remember to savor every bite!
