Is This Hair Removal Method Better Than Waxing?

Natural Hair Removal Technique Revealed

(AscendHealthy.com) – Waxing our legs often signifies a rite of passage, along with wearing nylons and nail polish. But the pain and money of waxing are much less fun than choosing pantyhose and polish colors. Learn which natural hair removal method may be better than waxing.

Waxing vs. Sugaring for Hair Removal

When we think of ways to achieve smooth, hair-free skin, waxing may rank high on our lists. Waxing can remove unwanted hair from areas such as our face, bikini lines, legs and underarms. But waxing for hair removal also has its downsides.

Waxing involves pressing a cloth or paper strip into hot wax that has been spread on skin, entrapping hairs. The pain occurs when the strip is pulled off, tugging hair out with it.

In addition, waxing products may contain ingredients that may irritate our skin, like fragrances and parabens. And whether done at home or in a professional setting, waxing can be expensive.

The natural hair removal method known as sugaring can achieve smooth skin without as much pain or money. Because sugar hair removal methods generally include only natural ingredients, sugaring may result in less irritation to your skin.

While waxing pulls at live skin cells in breaking the hair at the surface, sugaring pulls out the hair from the root. That makes sugaring particularly useful for curly hair, as well as ingrown hairs.

Recipe and Steps for Sugaring Hair Removal

Think that sugaring for hair removal sounds like a sweet alternative to waxing? Read on to check out the recipe and steps involved.

To make the sugar solution at home, you just need three ingredients.

  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1/8 cup lemon juice or apple cider vinegar
  • 1/8 cup warm water

Mix all the ingredients in a medium-sized pot. Place the pot on the stove and turn up to high heat as you stir until the mixture has boiled.

Reduce the temperature to medium heat, continuing to stir often. When the sugaring solution looks golden brown, remove from the heat.

Pour the mixture into a bowl to cool for 30 minutes before following these steps:

  • Clean: Cleanse the skin to be sugared. If you tend to have oily skin, use a body wipe or witch hazel.
  • Sugar: Holding the warm sugar mixture between your fingertips and thumb, spread the gel in the direction in which your hair grows.
  • Remove: Quickly remove the wax in the opposite direction parallel to your skin.
  • Repeat: Wait until your hair has returned and is ⅛ to ¼ inch long. You can then repeat the process.

If you feel hesitant to try this method at home for the first time, consider finding a spa or hair salon in your area that offers sugaring for hair removal. You can also purchase commercial sugaring pastes and gels.

Sugaring may not be the best alternative for all of us, however. Avoid sugaring if you are using vitamin C or a retinol product on your skin. In addition, if you are taking Accutane or steroids or have cold sores, sunburn, rashes, or swelling on your skin, skip the sugaring method. Talk with your dermatologist to discuss possible alternatives.

Those of us who have used waxing for hair removal know that the process involves money, pain and potential skin irritation. Sugaring may cost less, be less painful and result in less irritation to the skin. Overall, using sugar rather than wax may offer a sweet way to achieve our smooth skin goals.
